Soul Stones are ancient devices that look like purple black polished elliptical stones the size of a grown man’s fist. They are cool to the touch until they are activated, at which point the grow warm and glow in a greenish-yellow color (and shed light as a candle). Each PC has a Soul Stone.
They can be activated for two purposes:
1. Communication – each Soul Stone is paired with another stone. When both are held in the hands of living beings and a designated phrase is uttered then the consciousness of the wielders is switched, allowing for a sophisticated yet dangerous way of communicating with no distance limitation. Communicators switch Int, Wis and Cha scores, and loose all non-extraordinary abilities they have while communicating. The communication time is unlimited, but should one of the pair die during the switch then both communicators die.
2. Soul Switch – a Soul Stone may be used by a powerful spellcaster to switch a bonded wielder with another bonded wielder once the wielder has died. In Desert Heat each player has three characters.
⁃ If the first character should die the following will happen:
⁃ If the player has accumulated less than 50 story points – create a new character as stated below for cases where your third character dies
⁃ If the player has accumulated 50 story points or more – the second character is activated and sent in the first character’s place.
⁃ If the second character should die the following will happen:
⁃ If the player has accumulated less than 150 story points – your second character is in special state of stasis. You must convince the representatives of the Guild that the third character deserves to be activated. This is essentially a negotiation over what extra task your third character will need to complete and by when.
⁃ If the player has accumulated more than 150 story points – the third character is activated and sent in the second character’s place.
Once your third character dies, you will have to create a new character (-1 level from the current group level), and convince the powers that be at the Thieves’ Guild that you are worthy of being sent as backup to the mission. This essentially means that your new character will be sent for 3 battles to Blackdeath’s Arena and if she survives what she has been pit up against, she gets to go. Otherwise, it’s back to the drawing board for you. If she is sent, she will level up beforehand (so as not to hurt the group). Until all this happens the group will have to make do with one player less.
